San Francisco Bay Area producer / DJ / MC Kero One continues his streak of stellar remixes with this Portishead re-think. “Back in the 90’s, kids like myself would gravitate towards bands like Portishead, particularly when we wanted to take a break from hip hop. Since the drums were dirty and the sounds and singing were soulful, it gave us that familiar hiphop vibe while being something totally different,” he explains.
For Portishead’s 20 year anniversary, Kero wanted to rework one of their quintessential tracks stating “since the original version of “Roads” uses sparse instrumentation, I thought I could add a fuller dimension to the track while still allowing the lead vocalist – Beth Gibbons – to remain the focus.” As a full time musician for the last decade releasing music in a myriad of formats, collaborating with the likes of Stevie Wonder, Will.i.am, Aloe Blacc and Talib Kweli, Kero One remains a fixture on the Electronic / Soul / Jazz scene and has managed to consistently update his sound while still remaining true to his ‘classic’ influences.
