Cuerators and International Anthem have teamed up for an event promising to be a map of how Jazz makes its way to Hip Hop and how Hip Hop can make it back to Jazz. A lofty goal indeed but when you’re talking about musicians like LeFtO & Makaya McCraven, an internationally renowned DJ and an internationally renowned Drummer / Producer respectively, the goal seems pretty close to completion. Both men live on the road and this show is a rare chance to see both artists together…
A couple years back Makaya was a force to be reckoned with at our Elder Tree stage at West Fest, & we had LeFtO here for a set that same year. Both performances were stellar, and even though we’re obviously biased, we can safely say this event will be one for the books! Peep a few pics from the last LeFtO show here (courtesy of Victor Duarte).

Unknown Mortal Orchestra hits us in all the right places with, “Can’t Keep Checking My Phone,” the second single off of their upcoming album Multi-Love (out May 26 via Jagjaguwar). I’ve been lost in the melody and bass line for the last 30 minutes (honesty is the best policy no?). Having a shit day? In need of a pick me up? This just might be the jam for you. Cheers!
Chicago’s theWHOevers continue their “marathon” of drops for their new project Marathon with their latest release “Tree House.” Over soulful and sexy production courtesy of Ka-Yu, DOTKOM and J Arthur trade off with bars about life’s highs and lows (if you have a pulse, you’ll dig it). So far, 2 for 2, looking forward to how the rest of this project plays out.
What began as a way for a few friends to share tunes on gChat (when it was still called gChat), Cuerators has since attracted the attention of some of the world most influential DJs and recording artists. As their listener base has grown, their reputation as a best kept secret for discovering the new underground music has grown in tandem. The site’s founders King Hippo & D.Moon come from rich musical backgrounds and are both driven by a passion for discovering and sharing new music. It’s for this exact reason we asked the guys to be a part of the DANJ mix series.
Including tracks from notable artists like Flying Lotus, D’Angelo, Hiatus Kaiyote, & SBTRKT as well as lesser known tunes from artists like Lanzo, Porter Ray, Dave Aju, & Lord Echo, DANJ004 is a heady blend of soulful beats, hiphop, and progressively minded electronic tracks. So sit back and prepare for drift off. 90 minutes of aural pleasures awaits…
Today we’re excited to debut the video for ChampLow’s track “Picture This” from their recent Crown(ed) Royal ‘tape.’ Released in late ’14 as a part of a collaboration between State Champs and The Highest Low, this project of previously unreleased material features members of the 5-state deep Hip-Hop collective Honor Roll Gang.
Filmed on location at Chicago’s Zhou B Art Center, the video takes a cue from its surroundings by using a myriad special effects to mimic actual paintings. Pulling double duty on direction / filming, HRG members Nick Arcade and Snotty Pippen both show they can excel without a mic in their hands. The visual style lends itself well to the hypnotic, horn-led track produced by Marvelous Wonder, an a/v experience akin to rolling up and wandering through a modern art gallery.
Enjoy & share the video above, and be sure to get (re)acquainted with the full Crown(ed) Royal project here (free dl!)
Chicago based producer Vapor Eyes has created a steady buzz both locally and nationally since he first emerged in 2007, most notably through his shows and collaborations with Chicago’s Push Beats collective and Detroit label/collective, Young Heavy Souls. Since then, he has established himself as a bold experimenter and explosive live performer, unafraid to blend Hip Hop, EDM or whatever else has caught his ear and turn it into something new and wonderful. We sat down with him to discuss his influences, used Pontiac’s and his latest project Whispers.
DC lyricist/beat extraordinaire Oddisee gives us a crash course on love on the single “That’s Love” off of his upcoming project The Good Fight. Out May 5th via Mello Music Group, very excited to see what the whole project in it’s entirety has in store for us. Already picturing a beautiful evening or twenty this summer with this in very heavy rotation, zero sleep allowed on this one.
