Bringing to the forefront what’s typically a behind-the-scenes endeavor, the upcoming Fresh Roasted Beatmaking event is the aural equivalent of watching your favorite painter find inspiration, joining them on a supply run, and then patiently watching them work until the big reveal. 3 local record collectors — Tone B. Nimble (All Natural, Al-Tone Edits), Supreme Court (Sheer Magic), and King Hippo (Cuerators / WHPK) — provide the sample sources from their vinyl collections and a group of local beatmakers (including friend of GLM Sev Seveer) go to work, right on the spot, producing songs from those samples. And keeping in tune with the personal experience, the performance then morphs into a beat battle where audience members determine the winner. Let’s call it ‘high-minded Hip Hop.’
For a better idea of how this looks irl, check out photographer Victor Duarte’s brilliant black & white series from the previous event installment here. Additional information lives here. Continue reading “Fresh Roasted: Live Beat-Making & Battle 12/4 @ The Whistler” »
Also known as Shawn Rosenblatt, Netherfriends‘ career began in the mid-00’s composing layered Indie Pop music. After nearly a decade of touring, playing thousands of shows, and releasing dozens of musical projects, in 2012 he shifted musically to more Hip-Hop inspired rhythms utilizing original and sampled sounds. His debut LP P3ACE (pronounced three-peace) showcased his honed fundamentals while also letting him find more depth and dimension in the studio environment. Refusing to be pigeon-holed as a specific type of artist Netherfriends manages to toe the line between being honest and overbearing, and his cult following wouldn’t have it any other way. As his upcoming “TOUR4EVER” tour begins this week at Emporium, GLM sat with Rosenblatt for an interview & photoshoot…
On a European trip in a true Griswolds fashion (at least that’s how’s we’re imagining it), The Chicago Turntablist Authority (aka CTA) are on the verge of their City / Country repping performance at the DMC 2014 World Championships in London. Comprised of DJ Ambideckstriks, DJ Toltech, and RTST, as individuals they’ve won numerous turntablist/ DJ battles and this year finally assembled, or as we say at GLM, ‘voltroned’ into a super group.

Since forming in 2008, the 7-man Soul / Hip-Hop wrecking crew The O’My’s have quietly put together an unusually long streak of quality releases, features and performances, most prominently with rising star Chance the Rapper and his group the Social Experiment. Calling themselves the ‘new sound of Chicago Soul,’ the band set a high bar for themselves, one which they consistently meet and raise with their tireless work ethic, sold-out shows, and high profile collaborations.
Drawing from Chicago’s rich musical traditions of Blues, Jazz and Rock, what one notices almost immediately upon listening to their music is that voice. At all times otherworldly and mesmerizing, this set of pipes that moves between sweet falsettos and carnal howls belongs to lead singer, guitarist, and co-founder of The O’My’s, Maceo Haymes.
In preparation for the release of their next project Keeping the Faith, a Psychedelic Soul record slated for release late Fall of 2014, GLM sat down with Haymes and keyboardist / co-founder Nick Hennessey to discuss who they are, where they’ve been and where they’re heading.
