We’re in for a throwback treat at this month’s Red Bull Sound Select! Curated by Fake Shore Drive, and with performances by Ja Rule(NYC), The Outfit (Dallas), & Ty Money (Chicago), the show is bound to trigger fond memories of the early 00’s.
With three years since his last album, Ja Rule is emerging from the underground to remind everyone of his ability to “Mesmerize”. Most of our readers may remember him from his late-90’s/early-00’s DEF Jam catalog or his many Hip-Hop and R&B duets. Dallas-based The Outfit released their latest album, Deep Ellum (EP), only a month ago which you can peep here. Rounding out the lineup is local Harvey, Illinois MC; Ty Money who is riding on the heels of his recent mixtape, Cinco De Money.
Refresh your mind of what Rule is capable of with the video below. & If you’re in the Chicagoland area on September 16th, be sure to RSVP here for discount entry now!
With striking moves and breathtaking tricks, Red Bull Flying Bach is dropping into Chicago. Challenging the boundaries between cultures, Flying Bach is a visual spectacle that takes the intricate form of breakdance crew Flying Steps and combines it with the Classical stylings of composer Johann Sebastian Bach. Originating from Berlin, The Flying Steps have specialized in b-boying, popping and locking since their founding in 1993, having won several awards over the years from their exceptional talent in the art of dance. Respected as one of the most successful urban dance crews worldwide, Red Bull has coupled them with the well-known works of Bach for a creative and explosive performance for the eyes and ears.
Hosted by Red Bull, the performance is coming to The Chicago Theater for the weekend of September 25th. You can get your set of tickets here.

Today we’re excited to debut the video for ChampLow’s track “Picture This” from their recent Crown(ed) Royal ‘tape.’ Released in late ’14 as a part of a collaboration between State Champs and The Highest Low, this project of previously unreleased material features members of the 5-state deep Hip-Hop collective Honor Roll Gang.
Filmed on location at Chicago’s Zhou B Art Center, the video takes a cue from its surroundings by using a myriad special effects to mimic actual paintings. Pulling double duty on direction / filming, HRG members Nick Arcade and Snotty Pippen both show they can excel without a mic in their hands. The visual style lends itself well to the hypnotic, horn-led track produced by Marvelous Wonder, an a/v experience akin to rolling up and wandering through a modern art gallery.
Enjoy & share the video above, and be sure to get (re)acquainted with the full Crown(ed) Royal project here (free dl!)
Chicago’s own theWHOevers hit us with the first release off of their next album Marathon, “No Way,” bringing vocalist Erthe St. James along for the ride. An interesting thing about this project- they are releasing the project song by song every two weeks! Very intriguing, we will be keeping you updated on how this turns out. Much love for the Panik flip as well.
Born and raised in Caracas, Venezuela Mpeach‘s experimental music is reflective of an emerging movement of artists influenced by their individual cultural roots as well as their Internet-Age existence. As a multidisciplinary performer her creations intersect musical and visual art, where each side exists symbiotically. She explains “I use visuals just like a musical instrument. They are created as part of the composition. They don’t necessarily have a particular storyline but are choreographed to the structure and rhythmical patterns of the songs.” Continue reading “Mpeach – Malania [New Video] + CumbiaSazo This Weekend!” »
Chicago’s Lamon Manuel links with TK brethren Skech185 and Houston producer ATD (Analog(ue) Tape Dispenser) on “Skies” the first offering off of his upcoming project Music To Feel Like Shit To. With a blistering drum beat and haunting choir sample as the backdrop, Lamon and Skech trade bars while the punches fly in a visual that finds us privy to an evening in an underground women’s fight club (Word to Samantha Wakefield). An excellent introduction for what’s to come, we can’t wait to feel like shit listening to the full album!
Hot on the heels of the Soul Train Celebration, we’re back with the first edition of our regular boogie event in the same vein: Night Fever. SkighMOB‘s SolarFive hits us with the latest drop from his January project 88 Soul, a visual for the heat rock “Amethyst.” Directed by Chicago creative collective 119, the moody banger gets the heist treatment. Put on your ski mask and come along for the ride.
