With so many producers in Chicago, and being as spread out as we are, different sounds develop. For Volume 3, we’ve producers spanning a couple generations in local Bass & Hip-Hop music including Tensei, Void Pedal, Searchl1te, BRC, Denmark Vessey and many more! And as a special bonus, participating producers are featured on the “Chi-Sound” promo compilation available for FREE via the FACE MELT bandcamp (note: full album downloads include FREE event admission before 11pm!)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

February 1st, 2011. Presented by Ground Lift Media, FACE MELT is a new monthly event series which showcases envelope-pushing artists on a local, national, and international level. The 2011 programming schedule includes Live Bands, Live PA sets, DJs/Turntablists, & Touring Acts spanning genres like Dubstep, Glitch, Electronic, Hip-Hop, and Beat-related. And if that’s not enough, the resident roster boasts some of Chicago’s finest talents –Maker (Stonesthrow, Now-Again), DJ Intel (The Comeups, Platter Pirates), & DJ TREW (Ground Lift Media). Live Video installation by Killchnnl.

Positioned to be the defining voice in a rapidly evolving musical environment, FACE MELT continues for it’s thirteenth installment February 24th at Subt Lounge (2011 W. North Ave. 9pm, $5, 21+. RSVP via do312.com OR download the “Chi-Sound” compilation album for $5 entry all night) featuring beat sets by Tensei, Void Pedal, Searchl1te, Kollage, Vapor Eyes, Denmark Vessey, Japandrew, Tru Forever Beats, & BRC.

>>Face Melt featured in Timeout Chicago July ’11

When talking about Hip-Hop or any of the countless genres it has influenced, it’s all about the beats. Even after a producer loops ‘Amen Brother’ for the millionth time, it will always be about the beats. They’re the foundation of Hip-Hop, and the defining characteristic of any artist or genre claiming Hip-Hop as inspiration. And at FACE MELT, they’re the only thing that matters.

As if he’s already plotting to bring an MPC to his cousin’s quinceañera, Maker explains the underlying motivations of FACE MELT as “a gathering of different styles, cultures, and scenes that are all related… It’s like a family reunion but with hard ass drums.” Simple enough concept but reading between the lines, you may want to consider ear plugs!

Produced in conjunction with Crowdnoize.com, Frank151 / Chicago Riders, & Do312.

Ground Lift Media and the Minnesota-based design collective Burlesque of North America have joined forces to present the 2012 installment of DRE DAY: A Celebration of the Life and Music of Dr. Dre. February is quickly approaching, and this will be Chicago’s fourth year celebrating Andre Young and his creative contributions to the world of Hip-Hop.

It’s time to strap on your Compton hats and locs and celebrate the music and legacy of one of the greatest Hip-Hop artists of all time, the icon responsible for introducing the world to acts as diverse as N.W.A., Snoop Dogg, The D.O.C., Eminem, J.J. Fad, 50 Cent, Arabian Prince, and so many more. Bring your friends and celebrate the important birth date and memorable works of Dr. Dre!

Dre Day 2011 exceeded everyone’s expectations, and in 2012 we’re continuing to expand with bigger headliners, increased production values, more Dre activities / swag! Recent Red Bull Thre3style US Champion and founding member of Dre Day Chicago, Big Once takes the stage this year performing an exclusive Dr. Dre turntable routine. Psalm One (Rhymesayers) also performs, with local up-and-comer ADaD acting as the Master of Ceremonies. Also featuring DJs Intel, Maker, Trew, Pickel, & Kool Hersh, Live video installation by Killchnnl.

In continuing with the tradition set by last year’s Dre Day celebration, swag bags and additional Dre Day merch will be available (sticker packs, screen-printed 40 oz. bags, etc…) as well as a ‘Chronic’-themed photobooth, $20 Sack Pyramid game, and a Death Row costume contest.

EXCLUSIVE! Official Dre Day Chicago ’12 compilation Deep Covers 2 will be available for free download at groundliftmedia.bandcamp.com… Contains remixes, edits, & mashups of classic Dre and rare b-sides / album cuts by The Opus, Maker, Big Once, Intel, Pickel, Kool Hersh, Raj Mahal, and Trew.

Big Once Bio:

Disc Jockey, remix expert, and 2011 Red Bull Thre3style U.S. Champion, Big Once has been mixing and cutting wax for over thirteen years. He got his start as a teenager; spinning house parties, putting out mixtapes, and working with several local bands and emcees. Big Once broke into the Chicago hip-hop scene while still in college and since he has steadily been building his rep as one of the most well-respected and in-demand DJs in Chicago and across the country.

While most of his peers have spent years perfecting their look and brand, Big Once has spent that time in the lab. With a studio full of records and massive digital library, Big Once’s fast-paced, dynamic sets touch on every genre imaginable; all mixed with the precision, dexterity, and programming of a U.S. Champion. In a scene where anyone with a laptop and some software can claim to be a DJ, it is Once’s world-beating turntablist skills, unique live remixes, and energetic stage show that set him apart from others. These qualities have afforded Once to perform alongside everyone from the Z-Trip to Roy Ayers, headline clubs from Chicago to Los Angeles, direct the Vocalo 89.5 FM DJ collective, record with legends like Pete Rock, and teach at the University of Chicago.

Psalm One Bio:

Hailing from the Midwest region’s rising hotbed of talent, Psalm One has been named one of the next to blow up by the: Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun Times, The Onion and URB Magazine’s (then) Next 100. She’s a Chicago Southside native who’s been developing her craft for over a decade. But, Psalm One isn’t trying to be your favorite female rapper. She’s just trying to be your favorite. And she’s bringing more than candy to the table. She’s artistically witty, sonically soulful and lyrically unstoppable.

ADaD Bio:

Etching out the blueprint for the future of emceeing, ADaD is the next breakout artist to enter into the rap game. Championed by the likes of Exile and Madlib, he is the nexus between hip-hop’s Golden Era and the new movements derived from today’s hip-hop. Repping Chicago’s south side, ADaD is also member of Eulorythmics, but is quickly changing the game as a solo artist coming into his own. Dubbed the next hip-hop hopeful, he thematically brings fans back to self by preaching an acceptance of who you are. Executing wordplay that mainstream hip-hop compensates for overproduction and posturing, ADaD shares stages with some of the largest names in hip-hop with party-style performances never having to compromise his art or message.

MEAT NUMBER 5 BIO:

Main Entry: meat number 5
Pronunciation: ‘mEt ‘n&m ‘fIv/ noun, 2007, 2011.
Function: noun
1 n: a genetically engineered meat organism that perpetually feeds and grows off of itself by ingesting it’s own excrement. Perpetually growing bigger and bigger and eventually dispensing edible, nutritious meat for all times.

2 n: as in yellow number 5. but meat.

3 n: a sonic collaboration between Beatmaker/Drummer Ricky Ropesack & DJ/Co-Producer Big Once. They released their self-titled debut album in September of 2007. The Oblivion EP followed in 2009, and 2011 brings the release of their overdue second full length album Low Flying Planes. Ropesack and Big Once are former members of the deceased hip-hop band, The Cankles (2004-2006) and Big Once is the 2011 Red Bull Thre3style US Champion.

4 “Meat Number 5 are a mysterious and cagey duo nearly as mysterious as the music they create. Their approach to their tight-as-a-military-school-bed-sheet stage show is all business, as they let the jams speak for themselves.” – Mike Turner / KEXP

5 “Drummer Ricky Ropesack & DJ Big Once: Their sound is a nod to DJ Shadow’s classic album Endtroducing, and it’s nice to see that style embraced in a live setting. Their new EP The Oblivion is a step forward for the duo, and the remix contributions of Maker, Earmint and Maddjazz make for an extremely heady listen.” – Jeff Min/ centerstagechicago.com

A New Years Eve party set to occur in Chicago’s uber-hip Wicker Park, The Last New Years Ever promises a guilt-free celebration “fit only for the apocalypse,” as event promoters claim. As 2012 approaches, and with some believing doomsday may be upon us, organizers Ground Lift Media and Siren Haus are staging a decadent, end-times style affair they assure would make the Mayans envious. Chicago DJs Maker, John Simmons, Trew, Demchuck, Newlife, and Rude One, along with host Psalm One, will be on hand making sure attendees will “party like it’s 2011.”

“We wanted to produce an event that would mark the end of the world, the last great NYE party the masses would ever attend, easy on the pockets, and of course sans all of the sacrificial bloodletting” Ground Lift’s Nigel Ridgeway explains. With a live visual performance by Shudder Inc. supplementing the cataclysmic theme, as well as art installations created by Glorii Be and CZR PRZ, both DJs and artists alike are poised to “make the heavens and earth collide” as Ridgeway adds.

As the night progresses, attendees will enjoy a wide array of musical genres. One of the headlining acts, DJ John Simmons, a staple among Chicago’s legendary House music scene, cut his teeth by working under preeminent House DJ / producer Green Velvet. The night also is promising an all star cast of talent which event promoters say includes something for everyone, from House to Hip-Hop, Electro to Funk. The Chicago-based DJ / Producer Maker is also a featured headliner. Being a self-described “crate digger,” as well as having a reputation for being a prolific beatmaker, his DJ sets are known to touch on an assortment of genres. Having performed alongside such musicians as Portishead and De La Soul, Maker’s style and resume transcends the typical. Rude One, of the famed DJ collaborative Single Minded Pros and founder of the monthly Hip-Hop event “The Goodness,” is slated to provide booming beats for even the shrewdest Hip-Hop aficionado. Other DJs Trew, Newlife, and DJ Demchuck – whose bios cite a plethora of preferred genres to spin, from Disco to Brazilian Baile Funk – all add plenty of scope to the night’s “something for everyone” aural atmosphere. Chicago MC Psalm One has also signed on, and will entertain guests as hostess for the evening.

Party goers will enjoy a hosted bar from 9:00pm until midnight, with a complimentary champagne toast for ringing in the New Year. Tickets are $30, which covers both the hosted bar as well as the champagne toast.

A.D. [After Disco] v.8 w/ RCMP (Young Robots, Philadelphyinz), Yazi the DJ, Kwest-On
Exploring a decade in House music 1979-89… & future forward.

It was a publicity stunt gone awry, backlash from years of commercialized dance music. Steve Dahl’s infamous Disco Demolition Night (July 12, 1979) may have marked the end of an era to some, but Disco lived on in the ‘underground’ –thriving in fact– eventually finding a new voice as House music. Forced to continually evolve with the times and technology, House music’s rich history is based in a struggle for creative freedom, a struggle which defines the genre to this day.

Presented by Electric Elegance and Ground Lift Media, the new monthly event series A.D. (After Disco) takes a closer listen to the tumultuous post-Demolition Night years, and celebrates the emergence and evolution of House music & culture. Every 2nd Friday, A.D. takes over Chicago’s Sub-T Lounge with a featured lineup of rising and journeyman talents including Yazi the DJ and Kwest-On. And for the October event we’re happy to welcome direct from Pittsburgh / Philly, RCMP!

A.D. aims to invoke and inspire a movement. In the beginning there was Disco, now let’s learn about what happens After Disco…..

RCMP BIO

RCMP IS A DISCO STATE OF MIND CREATED BY DJ APT ONE & RELATIVE Q.

When it came out on vinyl in the summer of 2009, the RCMP EP signaled the arrival of a brave new force in disco. As the “nu-disco” sound was on the rise, the forward-thinking classicism of RCMP hit the scene like a left hook. DJ Apt One and Relative Q’s narrative song-writing reminded people that it’s ok to cry on the dancefloor. Babies were conceived to this record.

Soon, with support from worldwide tastemakers like Glasgow’s Optimo, NYC’s Cosmo Baker and the cosign of XLR8R magazine, Discobelle and other outlets, the record quickly sold out of vinyl units worldwide and the digital EP and the singles it spawned, Mustache Love and USA Groove, shot up the charts at digital retailers. This, of course, was only the beginning.

Fall 2011 will see the release of RCMP II, with a remix EP featuring Elvis Suarez (Strictly Rhythm), DJ Ayres (T&A/Young Robots), Fifteenth (Fools Gold), Pink Skull (RVNG Int’l), Burnso (Young Robots), Laberge (Solid Bump) and Pumpkin Patch (Young Robots).

As they say, “the show must go on,” and guests Tony Trimm & DJ Phonetics acted as if all was normal, melting faces left and right! For the 9th installment of FACE MELT, join us as we move to SubT Lounge (for real this time!!) Special guest Makaya McCraven performing his new Live Drums / Ableton Beat Set!!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

October 4th, 2011. And if that’s not enough, the resident roster boasts some of Chicago’s finest talents –Maker (Stonesthrow, Now-Again), Phaded (Dubfix), & DJ Intel (The Comeups, Platter Pirates). Hosted by ADaD (All Natural, Eulorhythmics). Live Video installation by Killchnnl.

Positioned to be the defining voice in a rapidly evolving musical environment, FACE MELT continues for it’s ninth installment October 28th at SubT Lounge (2011 W. North Ave. 10pm, $10, 21+. FREE entry before 11pm, or RSVP via do312.com for $5 entry all night). Featuring a special live drumming / beat set by Makaya McCraven.

>>Face Melt featured in Timeout Chicago

>>The Making Of… Video Series w/ Makaya McCraven

MAKAYA MCCRAVEN BIO (http://makayamccraven.com)

Makaya Marcus McCraven, drummer, producer, composer and multi-instrumentalist has been impressing crowds for almost two decades. His explosive drumming blends world rhythms and jazz traditions with a hip hop and rock attitude. Mixing music is not new to Makaya: his parents, drummer Stephen McCraven and Hungarian folk singer Agnes Zsigmondi, introduced him to eclectic sounds touring with him while he was still in the womb. Now, he has taken their influences and developed his own unique style. At age 27 he has internationally toured and performed with jazz greats such as Archie Shepp, Yusef Lateef, Charles Neville, Billy Taylor and many more. He has shared the stage with such acts as Wutang, Digable Planets, The Pharcyde, Mixmaster Mike, the Wailers, and the list goes on. Destined to be a musician before his birth, Makaya McCraven brings fresh life to music, merging old traditions with new sounds.

Born in Paris October 19th 1983, Makaya McCraven was exposed to the vast musical possibilities of the world. His father started him on drum lessons before he could hold a stick by practicing with his hands as a toddler. He also accompanied his mother to University of Massachusetts, sitting in on her classes as well as the voice lessons she instructed. By the time Makaya was 5 he was performing with a drum ensemble “The CMSS Bashers.” He has been performing ever since. In high school, Makaya was co-founder of the band, Cold Duck Complex. They have released 3 records and toured throughout the Northeast, opening for major national acts and gaining a loyal fan base. Cold Duck Complex became a campus favorite at the the University of Massachusetts, Amherst where they opened for 50 Cent, Rhazel and Reel Big Fish. As a music major at the University, Makaya played in the University Jazz Orchestra and earned 3 down beat awards.

Currently Makaya resides in Chicago and has performed with numerous groups in the city and on tour. Within just two years in Chicago, Makaya has already played with some of the city’s most respected jazz musicians, including Bobby Broom (Sonny Rollins), Bobby (Baabe) Irving (Miles Davis), Corey Wilkes, Henry Johnson, and Ari Brown. He has performed at some of Chicago’s finest venues and festivals, including Milllenium Park’s Pritzker Pavilion, the Taste of Chicago, the Chicago Jazz Festival, the Greenmill, the Jazz Showcase, and the Velvet Lounge. Rooted in Chicago, Makaya travels between the Midwest and East Coast. He is the Musical Director of the Pushkin, an arts collective in Greenfield, Massachusetts where he is known for throwing cultural events and recording albums with a variety of musicians.

Makaya’s background, coupled with his love for real hip hop, rock, and any other forward-thinking music that comes his way, makes for a dynamic instrumental fusion that is undeniable to the listener. Makaya is a true improviser who, with each performance, creates a new live music experience.

When I was a little kid, I lived in the mountains, then we moved. My “real” life began when my future stepdad played me some dance music. That was shortly after 1986, when the records on this mix came out. At the time, I basically didn’t have any friends except for my parents, Neil Tennant and Prince. Looking back, that was perhaps a better deal than I recognized. I roller skated to some of these songs in Kentucky. I heard some of them on a show called Dance Party USA that aired on cable TV. Some of these songs I didn’t hear till I got older and worked my way to Chicago, literally and as a listener. Now it’s 2011. I still don’t care about anything other than records and dancing. Every topic worth talking about is in the mix, on the wall at Gramaphone or in the basement of K-Starke.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

September 8th, 2011.

Positioned to be the defining voice in a rapidly evolving musical environment, FACE MELT continues for it’s eighth installment September 30th at SubT Lounge (2011 W. North Ave. 9pm, $10, 21+. Purchase a Face Melt Tee for FREE entry or RSVP via do312.com for $5 entry all night). Featuring live beat sets by Tony Trimm (producer for Serengeti, Yoome) and DJ Phonetics.

>>Face Melt featured in Timeout Chicago

TONY TRIMM BIO (http://tonytrimm.com)

Tony Trimm enjoys listening to Mogwai, Pelican and Tortoise. Originally from DesPlaines, he has lived in Chicago for the past 8 years. He used to skateboard but now he prefers a vintage Scotch. His other current interests include: spinning Krunk music, long slow movies, Mad Men and studying Kung Fu. He is currently a green/gold sash in Seven Star Praying Mantis. He uses analog synthesizers, midi controllers, a laptop and an oscilloscope for live sets.

Tony Trimm is a man of many side projects. He’s a producer for Serengeti, Yoome and a handful of other ventures that he is not yet allowed to reveal. He is currently set to release his solo project by the spring. He has toured with Serengeti and travelled the U.S. with bands such as WHY? and Deerhoof. He’s collaborated with his good buddies, Jeff Parker of Tortoise, Owen Ashworth (Casiotone for the Painfully Alone), Bryan Herweg of Pelican, and Josiah Wolf of WHY?

DJ PHONETICS BIO (http://soundcloud.com/djphonetics)

Speech Language Pathologist by day, Producer by night, Phonetics has found a way to seamlessly combine his music and profession to create a rounded palette for encouraging expression. His performance is a combination of wax, synth, and heavy MPC live pad drumming. In general, there is urge to call his music “Sampledelics.” His recent collaborations include Othello of Lightheaded, Kid Static, RacecaR, Green Llamas, Bad Wolff and Abstract Giants.

Produced in conjunction with Crowdnoize.com, Frank151 / Chicago Riders, & Do312.

Wrapping up our Summer lineup, we’re excited to present Chicago’s own Mr. West (of Dweebsquad) as our guest headliner! This month we’ll be looking at music from 1985 and the house music those years inspired. RSVP via do312.com for free entry before 11pm!

A.D. (After Disco) v6 w/ Mr. West (of Dweebsquad), Yazi the DJ, Adulture, Just.One.Duran

Every 2nd Friday, A.D. takes over Chicago’s Sub-T Lounge with a resident lineup of up-and-coming and journeyman talents including Adulture (Dust Traxx, Second City Recordings), Just.One.Duran, & Yazi the DJ. And for the July relaunch event we’re happy to welcome Mr. West of Dweebsquad.

MR. WEST BIO
Hailing from the south side of Chicago, Mr. West has quickly become a household name in the city. West gained much of his early influences from Chicago house and early hip-hop, however he will quickly add that every genre has something to offer him. Paying close attention to his surroundings while venturing out to explore new avenues of music has made him one of the more versatile DJ’s in the scene. Catering to his fans and the local indie electro movement, you can find West at many of the cities more popular music venues including, The Underground, Empire Liquors, Debonair, Subterranean, Angels & Kings, Rodan, Crocodile, BOARDROOM, LaSalle Power Co., Market, Rooftop, Evil Olive, & Spybar just to name a few.

Every 2nd Friday, A.D. takes over Chicago’s Sub-T Lounge with a resident lineup of up-and-coming and journeyman talents including Adulture (Dust Traxx, Second City Recordings), Just.One.Duran, & Yazi the DJ. And for the July relaunch event we’re happy to welcome Nathan Drew Larsen of Fresh Meat Records, Restless Natives.

A.D. aims to invoke and inspire a movement. In the beginning there was Disco, now let’s learn about what happens After Disco…..

NATHAN DREW LARSEN BIO

Nathan Drew Larsen came-up through the Chicago loft party and warehouse scene in the mid-nighties. His emotional music is influenced by the deep house of the time, including his work with hardware synths and other machines. Nathan’s use of field recordings and effects draw from disparate forms such as motoric and psychedelica. Nathan started releasing his original music in 2000 and since then his songs and remixes have appeared on Fresh Meat Records, NRK, 20:20 Vision, Renaissance, Global Underground, Airtight, Cyclo, and Underl_ne, among other labels. His debut release on Mazi’s Gourmet Recordings, “Standing Still,” featuring the vocals of Black Pearl, is considered to be a Chicago house classic. Nathan and Mazi currently run Fresh Meat Records and Loves. Nathan’s plays live with Mazi’s Audio Soul Project and records and djs with Chicago’s Samone Roberts as Restless Natives. He is a resident guest at Justin Long’s infamous all-vinyl Dotbleep monthly at Smart Bar. His next vinyl only single featuring a remix by Tevo Howard is set for release on Fresh Meat early this fall.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

June 29th, 2011.

Positioned to be the defining voice in a rapidly evolving musical environment, FACE MELT continues for it’s sixth installment July 29th at Darkroom (2210 W. Chicago Ave. 9pm, $10, 21+ … RSVP via do312.com for $5 all night) featuring performances by BRC (Subfix, Dubs Alive), Ruckus (Betamorph) & Cos (Push Beats).

Huge summer festivals? Check. Massive sold out shows? Check. Faces melted across the USA? Check. Being one of Chicago biggest Dubslingers for years now? Check. Ruckus AKA Charlie Bro has been a busy man this year. As many of you may know, Ruckus started as a drum and bass DJ. In early 2008 the pulsating sounds of dubstep grabbed a hold of him with no turning back since. Highlights include Ruckus destroying the Red Bull stage at the inaugural North Coast Music Fest in front of thousands of screaming bass heads and playing the first ever sold out Booty Halloween with DJ Dara and Eskmo. He’s also shared the stage with a “who’s who” of global talent including: Daedlus, The Gaslamp Killer, 12th Planet, Joe Nice, Rastatronics, Ginz, Metaphase, HULK, Mark Instinct, Claw, Nameloc, Richie August, Dara, Borgore, Bombaman, Eliot Lipp and Midnight Conspiracy “to name more than a few”.

Ruckus is also involved in the founding of a new super group of Chicago talent, Tripp Syndicate. The Syndicate features the roaring bass of Nameloc, the terrifying mic ripping MC Anti and the diabolical DJ skills of Ruckus ripping up 4 decks. 2010 allowed for ventures into the business side of bass music. Ruckus holds down the A&R duties of major North America dub step label: Betamorph’s drum step venture while also maintaining the status of the labels head DJ.

Chicago is renowned for its summer event season. With winters lasting for what often seems like an eternity, once temperatures rise, we get it in. So while you’re debating which outdoor restaurant to visit, scan through Ground Lift’s picks for must-see events for the next few months. Everything from Festivals featuring Common, Little Dragon, Budos Band, & Keys N Krates, to a couple choice Pilsen Arts district based events where you’ll see lowriders and drink craft beers.

This event just may be the best $10 dining decision you’ve ever made. Chef Won Kim’s Annual Brew Ha Ha takes over The Chicago Urban Art Society’s exhibition / gallery space for an afternoon of palette quenching eats, locally crafted beers (Low Dive, Powell Brewing, Brutally Honest Brewing), and whiskey (Angel’s Envy). As Won will tell you, “get ready to really f@#% your taste buds.” Indeed.

A.D. aims to invoke and inspire a movement. In the beginning there was Disco, now let’s learn about what happens After Disco…..

DJ LEGO BIO
Growing up in Chicago’s Humboldt Park and Logan Square communities, Rafael “Légo” Rodriguez dedicated himself to a career in music at a very early age. He landed himself a DJ residency at the well-known Chicago nightclub “Kaboom” by the age of 19. His notoriety and growing fan base in 1992 led to a now 17 year residency at Chicago’s Legendary “Boom Boom Room”, the longest running club night of any kind. Drawing from a wide spectrum of musical tastes as a DJ, Légo began producing his own music.

Légo’s professional career began in 1997 when Andy Adams of UC Music approached Légo for a remix of the Ralphi Rosario / Donna Blakely song “Take Me Up.” Légo’s remix hit Number 4 on the Billboard Dance Charts, selling more singles than Madonna and Celine Dion during April 1998. He’s since claimed two more Billboard hits with his remix prowess. One of a Ralphi Rosario / Donna Blakely collaboration “Do You Like The Way That It Feels” and Rosario’s hit, “Wanna Give It Up”, featuring Disco Diva Legend Linda Clifford.

In 1999 Légo produced the EP “Flava In Ya Ear” Vol. 2 on Afterhours Records, which included international hits “El Ritmo De Verdad” and “When I’m With You.” Both tracks immediately became anthems for the highly influential global party scene of Ibiza, Spain, which in-turn influenced the global nightclub and dance music communities. Hitting Number 1 on the International Dance Music Charts (and still the best selling release in the label’s history) Légo was catapulted to international stardom. “El Ritmo De Verdad” continues to rock dancefloors the world over to this day, and was also licensed to the French film “Le Cout De La Vie” (2003).

As Légo’s following in France grew he accepted an offer for a monthly residency at Club Le Gibus in Paris. Prompted by fans there he released a European-only mix compilation in 2001 entitled “100% House Vibes – Gibus – Le Son Du Club Vol. 2”. Later that year Bob Sinclair asked Légo to produce an unreleased track, titled “Trompeta Allegre”, for his mix compilation series “The Africanism All Stars”, which proved to be a great follow-up to “Flava In Ya Ear Vol. 2” and greatly furthered Légo’s career.

Légo’s music production, remix abilities, and record label, Poontin Muzik, have come to be recognized as defining forces of the House Music genre. In 2004 he remixed Beyoncé’s “Crazy in Love” (on Columbia UK), whose album won 5 Grammys. This was a great way to showcase his remixing abilities to the world. According to Wikipedia: Beyoncé’s “Crazy in Love” has reached number one in the charts of United States and the United Kingdom, and the top ten of many charts worldwide…. In 2009 Pitchfork ranked the song at #4 song on [their] list of The Top 500 Tracks of the decade.[1] “Crazy In Love” is the second biggest selling single worldwide this decade (2000-2009) with over 9 million copies sold.”

Légo’s later remix of “El Corillo” by La Tira, on EsNtion Latino / Warner Brothers showed his consistency in making the Latin and Dance charts. His remixes of “I Say Golé” by Hanna Hais on Atal Music and “Everybody Shake It” by Ralphi Rosario featuring Shawn Christopher on Blueplate Global have kept the attention level high on Légo and Poontin Muzik.

I’m not typically swayed by Lollapalooza lineups but this year the annual festival is forcing double takes left and right. Pulling in a bit more from Hip-Hop, Soul, and Bass/Electronic realms, between the main acts and Perry’s Stage (which btw, is being booked with increasingly impressive talent), you may want to invest in a clone or two to catch all the action! Check out Ground Lift’s Top 6 Picks below…

ATMOSPHERE

The cornerstone of what’s arguably the most successful independent Hip-Hop label (Rhymesayers), Atmosphere peaked quickly during the late 90s indie boom with their trademark dark, introspective style, and have managed to maintain momentum ever since. As forefathers of the current Minneapolis Hip-Hop scene, the duo of Slug and Ant achieved what many artists aspire to: staying independent while also staying paid. As the industry was in upheaval during the early / mid-00s, Atmosphere stood their ground and found commercial success while simultaneously building a massive, loyal fan base the world over.

As other notable indie labels folded, Rhymesayers (in conjunction with the Rhymesayers-owned record shop The Fifth Element) breathed life into the meandering Midwest Hip-Hop scene. Coupled with this solid home base, Atmosphere’s incessant tour schedule and collaborations with artists like Living Legends, KRS ONE, Murs, & Evidence kept them at the forefront of a rapidly evolving landscape. Experience speaks volumes and nowhere is this better witnessed than during their high energy live performances, which over the past couple years have been accompanied by a full band.

BUSY P

They say “pick one thing and do it well” but in Busy P’s case, he could care less what ‘they’ want you to believe. As a DJ, Record Label owner (Ed Banger), Producer, Remixer, Artist Manager, and leading voice in the French Electro / House scene, it’s safe to say he dabbles from time to time, rightfully earning the moniker “Busy.” But in a move to inspire Jacks-Of-All-Trades worldwide, he stands apart from other multi-taskers by attaining success across the board. The game was rigged somewhat however, when you start with all the chips winning comes easy.

Getting a leg up as Daft Punk’s manager, following their subsequent rise to stardom Busy P launched the Ed Banger imprint. Home to artists like Mr. Oizo, Uffie, Justice, and DJ Medhi, the label has helped define the French Dance music scene for over a decade. As a solo artist, his releases / remixes have been few and far between, but now that he stepped down as Daft’s management, expect to be hearing more…

CEE-LO GREEN

It’s easy to say Cee-Lo came a long way since his brief introduction via Outkast’s debut Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik or on Goodie Mob’s critically acclaimed Soul Food, but honestly I think we all saw his current incarnation a mile away. Emerging from the talented pool of artists ‘Dungeon Family’ (which includes Outkast, Organized Noize, Sleepy Brown, and slew of other members), his voice consistently stood out as the most soulful. Not in an R&B fashion, but more like a grizzled Southern preacher with an eye on the streets, and a past worth repenting.

Andre 3000 drew comparisons to Prince but there are few artists with which to compare Cee-Lo, and as a result he has quickly found himself as a leading voice in new Soul music. But the “Soul” genre can be very misleading, often equating an overly Retro / throwback style a’la Sharon Jones or The Mastersounds. While there’s certainly room for a true-to-form sound, Cee-Lo seems more content to delve into a wider range of influences. Motown homages pop up occasionally on the recent The Lady Killer, but he tends to succeed most when channeling the subtly abusive, confidently seductive, Modern Soul swag of a late era Teddy Pendergrass.

KIDS THESE DAYS

I have a hard time calling Chicago Hip-Hop bands “Hip-Hop” because typically you’ll hear influences from many genres, whether it’s Rock, Jazz, Funk, Soul, etc… and Kids These Days are no different as they habitually genre-cross with surprisingly solid results. The barely-legal, 8 member group comprised of three horns, a rapper, a blues-rock trio and a female singer burst onto the Chicago scene in the most literal sense. From the beginning, selling out shows has been the norm for Kids These Days and they still find time to support concerts with artists like Rhymefest, The Cool Kids, Rafael Saadiq, and Dom Kennedy.

2011 is shaping up to be the year of youthful collectives, what with Odd Future dominating news feeds so much that having ADD isn’t enough. But Kids These Days’ approach seems a bit more reigned in and refined than Tyler and Friends. After their debut at SXSW 2011 was met with critical and fan acclaim, the band refocused and are currently building momentum as their upcoming debut EP Hard Times nears release later this Summer.

MAYER HAWTHORNE

Honing his chops in the vital Ann Arbor & Detroit Hip-Hop scenes, Mayer Hawthorne (also once known as DJ Haircut, ½ of the duo NowOn) has enjoyed a meteoric rise to fame over the past few years. What began as pet project was quickly released by Stonesthrow after label head Peanut Butter Wolf caught wind. The debut single “Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out” and it’s now collectable heart-shaped vinyl set the stage and since ’09, Mayer Hawthorne went from selling out 300 cap venues to supporting tours for Bruno Mars, Janelle Monae, & Passion Pit.

Of course the Snoop Dogg co-sign only helped matters… But as legend recalls, when Peanut Butter Wolf was handed Mayer Hawthorne’s demo, he understandably mistook the music as being unearthed Soul rarities. And with production values and lyrics informed by legends like Curtis Mayfield, Isaac Hayes, and Holland-Dozier-Holland, it’s easy to see why. Led with a falsetto that often seems to be hanging on for dear life, MH’s music is best served live as all the theatrics, style, and band punctuation unite for a vintage 60’s Soul excursion.

PRETTY LIGHTS

A trend begun by Radiohead for their 1st album after leaving EMI In Rainbows, offering your music for free (or incredibly cheap) once seemed novel, yet nowadays it’s almost expected of indie artsts. Bandcamp & Topspin have changed the playing field, making it even easier for anyone to release music independently. But for Derek Smith (aka Pretty Lights), ‘free’ has been the sole option from the start. Festival-goers downloaded and shared his early releases as if they were trading Dead bootlegs in a stadium parking lot. And as a result his popularity skyrocketed, eventually leading to a now-legendary sold out Red Rocks concert.

Often found on tour, his frenetic show schedule finds him topping festivals bills from North Coast to Coachella to Bonaroo to DEMF. But it’s always kind of been this way. Entering the industry with all the finesse of a vet, Pretty Lights initially supported concerts with big name acts like STS9, The Disco Biscuits, & Widespread Panic. Although it’s his particular sound which piques most people’s ear holes. Producing Electronic music appealing to Hip-Hop heads (and vice versa), his hybrid style informs many of today’s beat-heavy, Bass artists along with like-minded trendsetters Flying Lotus and Glitch Mob.

Touring in support of his latest full length Ceremony, we’re excited to welcome Stonesthrow / Innovative Leisure recording artist Mexicans With Guns.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

June 7th, 2011.

Positioned to be the defining voice in a rapidly evolving musical environment, FACE MELT continues for it’s fifth installment June 24th at Darkroom (2210 W. Chicago Ave. 9pm, $10, 21+) featuring live performances by Mexicans With Guns (Stonesthrow / Innovative Leisure), Down Giant (Push Beats) & DJ Newlife (FEx).

Produced in conjunction with FEx, Crowdnoize.com, Frank151 / Chicago Riders, & Do312.

OFFICIAL AFTER PARTY @ THE MID!! w/ Tipper, Love & Light, BRC, RM Joint, & Maker. Password for FREE entry will be announced during FACE MELT. Get in to Win!

MEXICANS WITH GUNS BIO:
Mexicans With Guns is back in the club, and he’s not here to sell you roses. The bass luchadore sometimes known as Ernest Gonzales conjures mystic bass-bin beats for his debut Ceremony LP due May 10th on Innovative Leisure. It’s his second proper release on the Highland Park set following 2010′s out-of-print Me Gusto EP for which notably The FADER & LA Times spilled ink. Those familiar with the masked man’s previous efforts won’t be surprised by his gritty, sleep-with-one-eye-open basslines and atmospheric swelter, but they may find themselves entranced as they diffuse over the space of 14 original tracks. Gonzales crafted the distinct sound of Mexicans With Guns as an outlet for exploring traditional Hispanic folk music as an electronic artist in the present; on Ceremony he effortlessly transposes the spiritual tradition of the past onto the rattling dance halls of today.

The San Antonio, TX native cut his teeth producing remixes for Freddie Gibbs, Rainbow Arabia, CYNE, Faunts & Yppah and honing his live show headlining Low End Theory as well as on bills with Peanut Butter Wolf, Daedelus, Eliot Lipp, Mux Mool & Jogger. In addition to Me Gusto, he’s released a split EP with Robot Koch, last year’s Friends of Friends Vol 3. Now for Ceremony, MwG shows the chops he’s primed producing for others and also those he’s sharpened playing for a room. He’s invited a bevy of MCs & vocalists for his coming-out LP including Freddie Gibbs, Helado Negro, Chico Mann, Nocando, Zacky Force Funk & Sasha Perera of Jahcoozi.

The “Opening Incantation” of no hay espacio, no hay tiempo cedes to “Jaguar” an early standout, its shoulder-slinking, mid-tempo grind stalking along a fierce low end. Freddie Gibbs picks up the mic on “Highway To Hell” and the brash Gary, IN rapper proves he wouldn’t lose an ounce of his hustle south of the border. Staying decidedly dark is “Dame Lo;” dark enough, at least, to inspire the violent, boozy & occultish video The FADER called “the sickest we’ve seen in a minute.” “Me Gusto” lightens the mood a stitch, with Antibalas’ Chico Mann’s swaying melody improbably fusing a track filled with 8-bit, lazer & nods to 80′s funk & b. Finally, MwG dips into drones and loops, helping Savath y Savalas cohort Helado Negro, feel right at home on the disembodied “El Moreno.”

There is a sense that while Ceremony has finished, something larger has commenced… keep attuned to Mexicans With Guns in 2011 as he preps a 7″ featuring Texas rap legend Bun B (joining Freddie Gibbs on an alternate to “Highway to Hell”), collaborates with Mexican raverton originator Toy Selectah as Gun Selectah, and tours behind a mask & altar.
